Skills Checklist – Camping Leader
This skills checklist is designed to enable you, as a Camping Leader candidate, to reflect on the syllabus topics covered in the online training course and to rate yourself using the ‘learning stage’ described below.
Camping Leader Handbook
This handbook has been designed to support candidates through Mountain Training’s Camping Leader qualification. It contains useful information about the qualification as well as the syllabus and guidance notes. Mountain Training recognises that walking, climbing, and mountaineering are activities that have associated risks.
Hill Walking Book
This is the recommended textbook for Mountain Training walking and camping courses up to and including the Mountain Leader. It covers: route finding, navigation, clothing and equipment, camping, access and conservation, the environment, the weather, party management, hazards and risk management, dealing with incidents and first aid.

This skills checklist is designed to enable you, as a Mountain leader (ML) candidate, to both record what you have covered as your training progresses
A brief introduction to becoming a Mountain leader
Put simply, it is the qualification you're expected to have if you're going to lead groups safely in the mountains of Britain and Ireland. Often known just as the ML, it is nationally recognised by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), Ofqual and the Adventure Activities Licensing Service.

This skills checklist is designed to enable you, as a Mountain leader (ML) candidate, to both record what you have covered as your training progresses e.g. as a technical diary, and, at the close of your course, reflect on the syllabus topics covered during your Mountain Leader training allowing you to rate yourself using the ‘Learning stage’ described below.
